Attack & Defence – ‘The Battle of Britain’

Year 4 are currently learning about WW2.

We will be covering lots of exciting things within the unit and the children have already been working hard and showing real enthusiasm for the topic.  Below is a snap shot of our first few lessons.  Already, we have created timelines, completed map work and studied WW2 leaders.  We have worked together as a class, in groups and in pairs to carry out our own research and we are now having fun learning about ‘first flight’, the development of planes and the aircrafts used by the Germans and UK in WW2.  Keep your eye out for more posts as we continue our fascinating learning journey.

Children learning about the lead up to WW2 by thinking about some of the key events that took place. They created their own time lines with the information gathered.

In this lesson, the children learnt about the words ‘allies’ and ‘axis’ and thought about which countries supported either side. They also learnt that Adolf Hitler was the leader of Germany at the time and that Neville Chamberlain and later Winston Churchill were the Prime Ministers for the UK. They used different colours to represent the allies, axis and neutral countries.

The children across year 4 have had fun learning about the leaders at the time of WW2. They conducted research using the provided QR code and learnt lots about Adolf Hitler, Neville Chamberlain and Winston Churchill. The photos above show the children hard at work along with an example of the finished result.

Class Read

Each term we will be reading a different book in class with the children.

Every child has access to a copy of the book and will follow along as the teacher reads.  The aim is to foster a true love of reading and to expose them to genres and authors they may not naturally choose to read. It enables us to introduce new vocabulary and provides additional opportunities for children to practice their ‘reading between the lines’ skills.

Meet the Parent

Thank you to all those that were able to attend the Meet the Parent session on Monday. For those who were unable to I have included the information we went through on the evening on the PowerPoint.

It covers expectations in year 4, what the coverage looks like in lessons and topics throughout the year.

If anybody needs anything clarifying or wish to discuss anything, please feel free to come and talk to the teacher at the end of the day, or book an appointment for a later date.

English – Quest Story

Our current English Unit is a Quest story and our model text is called ‘The Rainbow Planet.’

During this unit our skills focus is conjunctions and prepositions along with our spelling rules of ‘-ed’ suffix, ‘-ing’ suffix and ‘-ly’ suffix.

The children have spent the first week creating their own amazing planets as a WOW starter along with learning the model text. Over the next couple of weeks they will be practicing the skills and writing their own quest story.

Please see below a copy of ‘The Rainbow Planet’ along with the story map.

Welcome to Year 4!

We have an exciting term ahead this year which starts off with the 3D curriculum and our topic, The Battle of Britain. Throughout the unit, we will build children’s vocabulary and focus on facilitating link-making between material covered in class, previously learnt knowledge and information from other areas of the curriculum. Children will work collaboratively and develop learning behaviours, such as resilience and communication.

When we are not learning about the Battle of Britain, we will be covering other areas in sessions including Science, PSHE, P4C (Philosophy for Children) and Computing. Our Science coverage this term is Electricity, which will involve creating circuits, exploring different materials and completing experiments. PSHE this term looks at building relationships with friends and family, and also keeping safe both online and in the real world. We will also consider media influence. Within P4C enquiries, we will look at power, courage, fairness all within a discussion framework – listening and responding to other children’s thoughts and opinions and thinking about these big concepts. Our computing sessions focus on developing some ‘basic skills’ within Word and PowerPoint documents, amending font size and style and colours, inserting pictures, formatting documents and setting up animations and transitions. Alongside all of this learning, we also have Music and French sessions, taught by our resident experts, Miss Bishop and Mrs Philips respectively, Forest School with Mr Holdaway as well as twice weekly PE lessons – this term covering agility, balance, coordination and invasion games.

Of course, a school day will also include the core subjects of English, maths and Reading. Our English Learning Journey follows the Talk4Writing model, where we immerse ourselves in a text type, imitate it to learn the structure and features, innovate our own versions as a class with support, before independently applying our understanding on our own writing. Our English units this term cover narrative within ‘Quest and ‘Defeating the Monster’ stories and non-fiction Information Texts.

Our daily Book Club sessions go hand in hand with our English – every other week, children will have the opportunity to read to two adults in the classroom, as well as our sessions focusing on a text and whole class ‘inference’ sessions to focus on this important skill within reading.

We ask that children read books regularly, ideally daily, and ask that they complete their reading record to show what they have read. We have a reading scheme in Lower Key Stage 2, whereby Reading Points are awarded to children who read regularly, with a reward being provided at the end of term to encourage and motivate everyone to delve into books.

Our Maths coverage this term includes looking at place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and measure. Daily class sessions are based on individual assessment of each child, so every pupil will have an individual learning journey, tailored to their needs. One BIG Year 4 target is being able to recall our Times Tables – we use Times Tables Rockstars website to practice this and would encourage you to promote this at home too – all children have their own login and password and should rock out as often as they can at home!

To help you understand what each class will be doing we have included the time tables below.
